The internet moves fast, sometimes too fast to even notice what we are leaving behind. New platforms appear overnight, trends rise and disappear within days, and information spreads globally in seconds. For many users, especially young people, this constant flow feels normal. Scrolling, posting, and sharing happens almost automatically. But beneath this speed lies a growing danger: the faster the internet moves, the harder it becomes to stay safe. This concern echoes the warnings of informatician and scientist Joseph Weizenbaum who argued in his book Computer Power and Human Reason: From Judgment to Calculation, published back in 1976, that technology can create an illusion of understanding and control, even when users do not fully grasp its consequences. His insights continue to be highly relevant in today’s world where speed often outpaces reflection and awareness. Weizenbaum remains a key reference for understanding the relationship between human judgement and computational systems.

The culture of speed

The modern internet is built on immediacy: messages are delivered instantly, videos autoplay, and content refreshes continuously. Social media platforms reward rapid engagement through likes, shares, and comments, encouraging instinctive responses rather than reflective ones. In this environment, hesitation is discouraged, and visibility often depends on speed. This culture shapes people’s behaviour and users learn to skim rather than read, react rather than evaluate, and participate constantly to avoid falling behind. News spreads faster than verification, and personal content circulates before its implications are considered. Constant presence becomes expected and even short periods offline can feel like exclusion.

In such a system, safety becomes secondary: users click on links without checking sources and trustworthiness first, they accept terms without reading them, and they share personal data without any reflection. This system and the way people interact with it reinforces Weizenbaum’s warning that technology can subtly shape human judgement and behaviour.

 

Security in a constantly changing environment

Security systems struggle to keep pace with constant technological change as new platforms and new solutions introduce new vulnerabilities. At the same time, developers continuously release updates and patches, but risks emerge faster than they can be fully addressed. Phishing attacks imitate trusted companies and personal contacts, making it difficult to detect them in fast-scrolling environments. A message that appears legitimate can easily lead to harmful consequences if clicked without checking it first. At the same time, vast amounts of personal data, e.g. location, behaviour, preferences, and browsing history, are collected and processed. While everyone who is active online is exposed to this, most users do not fully understand how this data is gathered or used. Even when privacy settings exist, they operate within complex systems that are largely invisible.

This situation – our current reality – reflects a core idea in Weizenbaum’s work: thinking that computers simply execute instructions is misleading. In reality, the systems are so complex that even their own creators cannot oversee every process. This complexity increases a dangerous gap between technological operation and human understanding.

 

The complexity behind digital systems

Weizenbaum argues that modern computer systems are inherently difficult to fully understand because they are built and modified over long periods of time by multiple programmers. As teams, requirements, and conditions change, the systems become so complex that no single person can fully grasp how they work. This complexity leads to a serious consequence: the idea that a computer is completely controllable becomes an illusion and even developers lose complete understanding. This technical complexity feeds a deeper intellectual shift, as we drift away from human judgement towards computational calculation, marking a transition from contextual human reasoning to rule-based machine processing. This shift encourages a technocratic mindset where reality is increasingly understood only through what can be computed. One of the big risks that this carries is the reduction of the “human experience” to what is measurable and calculable with a computer.

 

The illusion of control

Despite this complexity, users often feel in control because platforms provide settings, permissions, and choices. However, the underlying systems remain hidden and difficult to decipher. Algorithms determine what content is shown, how it is prioritised, and how users are guided through digital environments without them realising that it is happening. This creates an illusion of control, as interfaces appear simple, but the systems behind them are complex and opaque. This is exactly what Joseph Weizenbaum warned us about all those years ago – people tend to trust systems they do not fully understand, especially when those systems appear efficient or intuitive. In today’s internet, this trust is reinforced by designing choices that prioritise usability over transparency. The smoother the system feels, the less visible its internal complexity becomes and the easier we trust it.

 

Attention, distraction, and risk

Nowadays, users are constantly under pressure as notifications, updates, and continuous content streams fragment their focus and encourage rapid switching between tasks. Users remain active, but are rarely fully concentrated. In this state, important signals such as suspicious links or security warnings are easily missed and actions become automatic rather than deliberate, increasing vulnerability.

Weizenbaum’s argument is especially relevant here: when systems demand constant reaction, they reduce the space for human judgement. Over time, this weakens the ability to evaluate risk critically.

 

A system that never slows down

The internet is defined by continuous change. Platforms evolve constantly, updates are ongoing, and new technologies appear before older ones are fully understood. There is no stable point where the system pauses. This makes it difficult to establish consistent habits of safety or reflection. What is secure today may not be secure tomorrow. Users are expected to adapt continuously, but adaptation requires time that is not available.

Weizenbaum also pointed to the ethical consequences of this shift, warning that societies can become willing to let machines take on roles that require human judgement. This raises concerns about where technological authority should end.

For this reason, Weizenbaum argued that there are domains in which computers should not replace human decision-making, particularly where ethical judgement is essential – this is still true today, and maybe more relevant than ever.

 

When the digital world moves faster than we can think

The internet’s speed is both its greatest strength and its most significant challenge. It enables communication, innovation, and global connectivity at an unprecedented scale, but it also creates conditions in which safety, awareness, and understanding struggle to keep up. Weizenbaum’s approach highlights a central tension: the growing dominance of calculation over judgement, and the risk of reducing reality to what machines can process. His warning is not against technology itself, but against over-reliance on it in contexts where human understanding is essential. His findings and ideas have lost nothing of their urgency and importance after all these years – in fact, if anything, they have become even more crucial for current generations.

Ultimately, the challenge is not simply to build faster or more powerful systems, but to ensure that human judgement, responsibility, and reflection remain central in how those systems are used.
